Everything you need for GST billing

From the tax split to the PDF, the generator above covers what a GST tax invoice has to carry.

  • Tax split by place of supply

Your GSTIN’s state code and the place of supply decide CGST + SGST or IGST, so the two can never disagree. Enter any rate per line: 5%, 18%, 40% or another.

  • HSN & SAC on every line

Type the HSN or SAC code once. Items you have billed before are remembered in this browser, so their HSN, rate and GST rate fill in when you type the name again.

  • GSTIN format check

Your GSTIN and the buyer’s are checked against the 15-character GSTIN format before the PDF is made, so a mistyped number is caught before it reaches the bill.

  • Your logo, bank and UPI

Add your logo, signature, bank details and terms. Enter a UPI ID and a scannable UPI QR code is printed on the bill for the customer to pay.

What is a GST bill & why is it mandatory under Indian tax law?

A GST bill (also known as a tax invoice) is a legal document issued by a registered supplier when selling goods or services. It is the primary document that supports the buyer's claim for Input Tax Credit (ITC). Under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act of 2017, issuing a compliant invoice is a mandatory legal requirement for all businesses registered under the regular scheme.

If you fail to provide a proper GST bill or issue an incorrect invoice, your business can face strict penalties of up to 100% of the tax due or ₹10,000 (whichever is higher). More importantly, your business customers will not be able to claim ITC, causing them financial loss and damaging your business relationships. VyapRise takes the error-prone parts of this off your hands: the tax split, the totals and the fields every bill has to carry.

Rule 46 checklist: every field a valid GST invoice must carry

According to Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, every tax invoice must contain the following specific details. Check how VyapRise handles each of them:

GST tax slabs & HSN requirements (India)

Since 22 September 2025 GST has two main rates, 5% and 18%, plus 40% for a short list of goods; the 12% and 28% slabs were removed, and special rates such as 3% on gold continue. The 57th GST Council meeting (8 October 2026) left rates unchanged. See what moved where. Understanding the rates and code requirements avoids classification disputes. The current HSN code requirements are:

  • Turnover up to ₹5 Crores — Minimum 4-digit HSN code required for B2B transactions. Optional for B2C.
  • Turnover above ₹5 Crores — Mandatory 6-digit HSN code required for all B2B and B2C transactions.
  • Export & Import — Mandatory 8-digit HSN code required.

B2B vs B2C invoicing: key structural differences

The billing flow differs significantly based on whether you are selling to another business (B2B) or a final consumer (B2C):

  • B2B Invoices: Customer GSTIN is mandatory. The buyer will claim Input Tax Credit based on the invoice uploaded to GSTR-1. Accurate HSN coding is required.
  • B2C Invoices: Customer GSTIN is not required. Name and address of the customer are required only if the invoice value exceeds ₹50,000. Under GSTR-1, these are summarized unless they are inter-state invoices above ₹1 lakh (B2C Large; the limit was ₹2.5 lakh until August 2024, Notification 12/2024-CT).

How to make a GST bill: step by step, with a worked example

The same eight steps whether you write the bill by hand, in a spreadsheet or in the generator above.

  1. Check which document you need. A registered regular dealer issues a tax invoice. A composition dealer, or anyone selling exempt goods, issues a bill of supply instead and charges no GST. For a cash sale under ₹200 to a consumer who does not ask for one, you may skip the bill and issue one consolidated invoice at the end of the day (Section 31(3)(b)).
  2. Give it a number and a date. The number can be up to 16 characters (letters, numerals, - and /), runs in sequence, and must not repeat within a financial year (Rule 46(b)). For goods, issue the bill at or before delivery; for services, within 30 days of the supply (Rule 47).
  3. Add the buyer. For a registered buyer, the name, address and 15-character GSTIN: without the GSTIN the buyer cannot claim input tax credit. For an unregistered buyer, the name, address and state are required only when the bill is for ₹50,000 or more.
  4. Add each item on its own line. Description, HSN code (SAC for a service), quantity, unit, rate and any discount. A discount shown on the bill reduces the taxable value (Section 15(3)(a)); a discount agreed later does not.
  5. Decide CGST + SGST or IGST from the place of supply. If the place of supply is in your own state, split the rate in two: CGST and SGST. If it is in another state, charge the whole rate as IGST. For goods the place of supply is where delivery ends, not the buyer's billing address.
  6. Work out the tax and the total. Taxable value = quantity × rate − discount. Tax = taxable value × rate, shown separately for CGST, SGST or IGST. Round each tax amount to the nearest rupee (Section 170) and show the grand total in figures and in words.
  7. Sign and make the copies. A signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised person. For goods, three copies: Original for Recipient, Duplicate for Transporter, Triplicate for Supplier. For services, two: Original and Duplicate (Rule 48).
  8. Report it. B2B bills go line by line into GSTR-1; B2C bills are summarised, except inter-state bills above ₹1 lakh. If your aggregate turnover crossed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18, a B2B bill also needs an IRN from the e-invoice portal before it is valid.

Worked example: one bill, in-state and out-of-state

A furniture shop in Ahmedabad sells 2 steel almirahs (HSN 9403) at ₹9,000 each, with a 5% discount, at 18% GST.

LineBuyer in GujaratBuyer in Maharashtra
2 × ₹9,000₹18,000₹18,000
Discount 5%− ₹900− ₹900
Taxable value₹17,100₹17,100
CGST 9%₹1,539—
SGST 9%₹1,539—
IGST 18%—₹3,078
Bill total₹20,178₹20,178

The customer pays the same amount either way; what changes is which government the tax goes to, which is why the split has to be right on the bill.

Mistakes that make a GST bill invalid

  • No GSTIN on a B2B bill. The buyer loses the input tax credit and will send the bill back.
  • IGST because the buyer's office is in another state, when the goods were delivered within yours. The place of supply decides, not the billing address.
  • "Rate + GST" as one lump. The taxable value, the rate and the tax amount must each be shown; CGST and SGST on separate lines.
  • GST added on top of the MRP. The MRP already includes GST; charging it again is overcharging.
  • Repeating an invoice number in the same financial year, or starting a new series mid-year without telling the department in GSTR-1.
  • A tax invoice from a composition dealer. Composition dealers cannot collect GST; the bill must say "Bill of Supply" and carry the composition declaration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GST bill online for free?

Use the GST Bill Generator on this page — no signup required. Add your business name, GSTIN, and bank details, then add the buyer and items with HSN/SAC codes. CGST, SGST and IGST are calculated automatically from the place of supply, and you can download the PDF straight away. Create a free VyapRise account only if you want your bills saved and searchable across devices.

What is the GST bill format, and which details are required?

A valid GST bill must include: supplier GSTIN, invoice number and date, buyer details, HSN/SAC codes for each item, taxable value, CGST/SGST or IGST rates and amounts, total value, and place of supply. The generator keeps your business details and each item you have billed before, so on a new bill you mostly add the buyer and the items.

When is IGST applied instead of CGST and SGST on a GST bill?

IGST (Integrated GST) is applied on inter-state transactions, i.e., when the supplier's state and the place of supply (buyer's state) are different. CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are applied on intra-state transactions, i.e., when both the supplier and buyer are located in the same state.

Is VyapRise GST billing software free?

The GST bill maker on this page is free and needs no sign-up. The VyapRise app has a Free plan that is free forever for one user (the owner), with up to 10 sales invoices a month per company, 30 items and 10 customers. Pro, at ₹1,499 per year, adds unlimited invoices, purchase bills, staff users, quotations and challans, full accounting and GST reports, and every new company can try Pro free for 7 days. No card is needed to sign up.

Can I create GST bills on mobile?

Yes, VyapRise is a cloud-based platform accessible from any device — desktop, tablet, or mobile. Create and share GST bills on the go with your customers.

Can VyapRise generate e-invoices (IRN) and e-way bills?

No — VyapRise doesn't generate IRNs or e-way bill numbers; both are made on the government portals (einvoice1.gst.gov.in and ewaybillgst.gov.in). What VyapRise does get right beforehand is everything those portals check: the buyer's GSTIN is validated when you save it, every line carries its HSN/SAC code, and CGST + SGST or IGST follows the place of supply.

How do I make a GST bill without software?

On paper or in a spreadsheet, the bill needs the same things: your name, address and GSTIN; a serial number and date; the buyer's name, address and GSTIN; each item with its HSN or SAC code, quantity, unit, rate and discount; the taxable value; CGST and SGST (same state) or IGST (another state) shown separately; the total in figures and words; and a signature. The step-by-step section on this page walks through it with an example. The free generator above does the arithmetic and the layout for you, and needs no sign-up.

Within how many days must a GST bill be issued?

For goods, the tax invoice is issued at or before the goods are removed or delivered. For services, within 30 days of the supply (45 days for banks, NBFCs and insurers). A sale under ₹200 to an unregistered customer who does not ask for a bill can be covered by one consolidated invoice at the end of the day.

What is the penalty for issuing an incorrect GST invoice?

Issuing an incorrect invoice or failing to issue one can lead to a penalty under Section 122 of the CGST Act. The penalty is ₹10,000 or the amount of tax evaded, whichever is higher. Using a standard template system like VyapRise protects you from compliance errors.
