VyapRise vs Tally

A cloud Tally alternative your accountant can still work with

Tally is the default accounting package for Indian businesses, and most CAs know it well. VyapRise runs in the browser, covers operations Tally was never built for, and can export your ledgers and vouchers as Tally XML — so your CA keeps working the way they already do.

What Tally does well

Tally is the accounting package most Indian CAs learned on, and it shows. Voucher entry is keyboard-fast, the statutory reports are thorough, and an accountant can open a Tally company and audit it without asking how it was set up.

TallyPrime is more than ledgers. Tally's own help pages describe godowns, batch-wise stock with manufacturing and expiry dates, and a bill of materials with a manufacturing journal. It runs on a Windows computer and keeps working when the internet is down. Licences come as Silver for one user or Gold for several users on the same local network, bought outright or rented.

For remote work, Tally offers its own options, such as Tally Virtual User and TallyPrime Cloud Access. Whether those suit you depends on your setup and your Tally partner.

Where businesses start looking for a Tally alternative is the daily work outside the accounts: a sales team raising orders and challans, a godown receiving goods, a shop floor recording output. VyapRise is built around that work and hands the books back to your CA in Tally's own format.

Where VyapRise is different from Tally

Tally is accounting-first. VyapRise starts from the documents your team handles every day.

Moving your data from Tally

You can bring masters across on any plan, and the books on Pro.

What you have in TallyHow it comes into VyapRise
Customers and suppliersExport the list to Excel or CSV and load it with Import Data. Match the columns, preview every row, and fix anything listed in the error file. Nothing is saved until you confirm.
Items and raw materialsThe same Import Data screen (materials can carry a reorder level). Item opening stock is not in the import; enter it on each item afterwards. Files can be .csv, .xlsx or .xls, up to 10 MB each.
What each party owes youEnter it as an opening balance, so the customer ledger starts where your old books end.
Bills still unpaid from beforeLoad them with the Open invoices import, on any plan: each unpaid bill comes in as an opening bill of its customer, and the opening balance becomes what is still owed. No sale, tax or stock is booked twice. When the money comes, Receive Payment offers the bill, or you record the receipt against Old invoices (not in VyapRise); receipts are on Pro.
Ledgers and vouchersOn Pro, import them from TallyPrime XML. The same format goes back to your CA at month end.
Past invoices and billsPast invoices are not recreated as VyapRise invoices. Keep them in Tally for reference and start billing in VyapRise from a clean date.

Customers, suppliers and items come through Excel or CSV on every plan (on Free, up to the item and customer limits), including the .xls files Tally ERP 9 produces. TallyPrime XML import and export are on Pro.

A typical month with VyapRise and your CA

Your team works in VyapRise every day on Pro. Sales raises quotations, orders and invoices; the store keeper records goods receipts and transfers between warehouses; the cashier takes payments. Each of those documents posts its own double-entry journal, so the books build up as the work happens, not at month end.

During the month you watch outstanding, stock and sales from the reports screen, in a phone browser if you are away from the office. Bank entries can be reconciled as statements arrive.

At month end, on Pro, you review the GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B reports and the HSN summary, run the check before filing, and match purchases against the GSTR-2B JSON you download from the portal. Send to CA emails the month's GSTR-1 file and the PDFs to your accountant. VyapRise does not file returns, so filing stays with you or your CA.

Then you export the month's ledgers and vouchers as TallyPrime XML. Your CA imports the file into Tally as usual and finalises the accounts there. If you prefer, add the CA as a VyapRise user at no charge and let them check entries directly. For more on how the books work, see accounting in VyapRise.

Who should stay on Tally

VyapRise usually fits

  • Businesses whose daily work is orders, dispatch, stock and collections, with the CA doing the accounts in Tally
  • Small manufacturers who want production orders and job cards, not only a manufacturing journal
  • Owners who want to check stock and outstanding from a phone browser
  • Teams spread across a shop, a godown and home rather than one office network

Stay on Tally if

Your CA runs the books end to end and nobody else needs daily access, or you need to work offline: VyapRise needs internet. VyapRise also lists expiring stock only in a report and a daily email (Pro), with no SMS or WhatsApp alerts, and does not file GST returns: it prepares and checks them and sends them to your CA. If you need alerts or filing from the software, check whether Tally does it in your setup.

Should you switch from Tally?

Switch if…

  • You want your billing and stock accessible from a phone or any browser, not one desktop
  • You run operations — orders, dispatch, production — that live outside the accounts
  • You manufacture and want job cards and quality checks on the shop floor, not only a manufacturing journal
  • You want your CA to keep using Tally while your team works somewhere better suited to daily operations

Probably don't switch if…

If your requirement is purely statutory accounting handled end-to-end by your CA in Tally, and nobody in your business needs day-to-day billing or stock access, staying on Tally is reasonable. The same goes if you need to work offline: Tally installs on your computer, while VyapRise needs an internet connection. VyapRise also sends no expiry alerts by SMS or WhatsApp and does not file GST returns (it prepares and checks GSTR-1 and sends the returns to your CA); if you need either, check whether Tally does it in your setup.

Switching from Tally, step by step

  1. 01

    Create a free account

The Free plan is free forever and needs no card. Pro is open free for your first 7 days.

  2. 02

Bring your ledgers and items across

Export customers, suppliers and stock items from Tally to Excel. Import Data reads the .xls file Tally ERP 9 exports as well as .xlsx and CSV, and shows a preview before anything is saved. On Pro, ledgers and vouchers can also come in as TallyPrime XML.

  3. 03

    Enter opening stock and balances

Add each item's opening stock and each party's opening balance, so your first stock and outstanding reports agree with your old books.

  4. 04

    Keep your CA on Tally

On Pro, export ledgers and vouchers as TallyPrime XML, and your CA imports them into Tally as usual.

Common questions

How much does VyapRise cost compared to Tally?

The Free plan is free forever for one user, the owner: sales billing with up to 10 invoices a month, 30 items and 10 customers, stock in one warehouse and reports for the current month. Pro is ₹1,499 per year and adds unlimited invoices, purchase bills, receipts and payments, staff users, quotations, orders and challans, purchase orders and GRN, more warehouses, manufacturing, POS, full accounting and GST reports, and every new company can try Pro free for 7 days. Pro has no per-user charge.

Can I move my data from Tally?

Yes. Import Data brings in customers, suppliers and items from Excel or CSV on every plan, and Pro adds Tally XML for ledgers and vouchers, so your accountant can keep working in Tally while your team uses VyapRise. From any other software, export your items and customers to Excel and import them, then enter each item's opening stock and each party's opening balance, so your books start where the old ones end.

Do I need to install any software?

No. VyapRise runs in any browser on a PC, Mac, tablet or phone, and can be added to an Android home screen like an app. Nothing to install on a specific machine.

Will my CA have to learn new software?

No. Your team bills and manages stock in VyapRise, and on Pro you export ledgers and vouchers as Tally XML for your CA to import. On Pro you can also add your CA as a user at no extra charge.

Can I use it from my phone?

Yes. VyapRise runs in the browser on any phone, and you can add it to your home screen like an app, so billing, stock and outstanding are not tied to one office computer. It needs an internet connection.

Which GST reports does it include?

Pro includes GSTR-1 (on screen, PDF, CSV and Excel, with a check against the portal's rules before filing), GSTR-3B, the HSN summary and GSTR-2B reconciliation from the portal JSON, along with trial balance, balance sheet and P&L. Sales and stock reports and the sales tax register are on the Free plan, for the current month. VyapRise does not file returns.

Does VyapRise track batches and expiry dates like Tally?

Yes, on Pro and in the 7-day free trial: batch and expiry dates go on the purchase bill, each sale takes the earliest-expiring batch, and the Expiring Stock report lists what runs out next. On Pro the daily summary email also lists stock expiring in the next 30 days. There are no SMS or WhatsApp alerts.
